About ComSciCon
ComSciCon provides graduate student attendees with a one-of-a-kind opportunity to meet early career leaders in Science Communication, learn from and interact with a remarkable group of invited experts, and produce an original work communicating complex technical concepts from science and engineering to a new audience.

Application, registration, and attendance at the workshop is free of charge for accepted applicants. Attendees to ComSciCon are required to attend the entire 3-day workshop and to submit a science communication piece (articles, videos, comics, etc) prior to the workshop.

Attendance at ComSciCon is limited to current (or recently graduated*) graduate students in residence at US or Canadian institutions. International students who study at US and Canadian institutions are gladly welcomed. We unfortunately cannot accept students from outside the US or Canada.

ComSciCon applications are competitive and we encourage applicants to prepare their responses with care.

We encourage women, minorities (minoritized identities), and members of the LGBTQIA+ communities to apply. ComSciCon is committed to diversity and equity, and encourages all people to apply to the conference. Accommodations can be provided upon request for people with disabilities. We will provide opportunities to request specific accommodations after the selection process for attendees is complete.

Please see our Code of Conduct here: https://comscicon.com/comscicon-flagship-2021-code-conduct

*Recent graduates must have graduated no earlier than December 2020.
Will you be able to attend the entire workshop? *
The workshop will take place virtually from August 4-7, 2021.
Essay Questions & Saving Your Progress
The following questions will form the foundation of your application. You may seek input from others on your answers to the questions below, but the work should be your own. ComSciCon is committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion. We value and honor diverse science communication experiences and backgrounds, and we encourage you to share any forms of science communication you have engaged in (not only within academic settings, for example).

Each response has a character limit (including spaces), and they can be answered on Page 3 of the application.

We are providing them for you here so you can consider your responses before beginning the application. You will be able to save your progress before answering these questions by submitting an unfinished application and returning to edit it later.

------------------------------------

Question 1:
Describe your previous experience with science communication and how your experiences have been innovative, unique, or impactful.

Describe one or more science communication efforts you've been involved in. What makes them, and for whom are they, particularly impactful or innovative? These could include participation or leadership in student organizations, contributions to science outreach programs, blogging or other writing for the general public, activity on social media, or other experiences. Try to focus on activities outside of your regular duties as a graduate student.

Write no more than 750 characters (includes spaces).

------------------------------------

Question 2:
Please describe your research as you would to the general public.

Imagine you are asked what you do by a member of the general public. Please give an example of how you would describe the research/work you do in an accurate, but exciting way.

Explain your work and research in a clear and engaging way that is accessible to your audience. Please identify your audience and avoid using jargon.

Write no more than 500 characters (includes spaces).

------------------------------------

Question 3:
Why do you want to attend ComSciCon? How will attending ComSciCon help further your goals as a science communicator? What experience or perspective would you bring to the ComSciCon community?

For example, consider one or more of the following questions: Are there new efforts you are hoping to launch or get engaged in through the connections you would make at ComSciCon? How would attending help or influence your ongoing projects and your future career? How would you bring the things you learned at ComSciCon back to your home institution?

Write no more than 500 characters (includes spaces).

------------------------------------

Question 4:
How do you (or plan to) incorporate IDEA (Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Accessibility) into your science communication practices?

Write no more than 750 characters (includes spaces).
Pre-Conference Requirements for Attendees
Attendees will be asked to complete preparatory tasks before the workshop, including developing science communication pieces to be peer- and expert-reviewed at the conference. Please look over the requirements (link below) and confirm that you will participate in all required pre-conference elements of the workshop. At present, the requirements are only approximate and based on previous years' requirements. They will be updated as the conference program is finalized.

Write-A-Thon: Through the "Write-A-Thon", ComSciCon attendees develop science communication pieces (articles, videos, comics, etc) and workshop them extensively with fellow attendees and science communication experts.

Poster (Optional): ComSciCon 2021 will feature a poster session highlighting the science outreach, communication, and social media activities of our attendees and several local SciComm organizations.

Evaluation Surveys: ComSciCon is interested in learning more about how best to improve science communication training. We evaluate our performance through surveys before, immediately following, and 6-months after the workshop.

For more information, please consult our website: https://comscicon.com/comscicon-flagship-2021-pre-workshop-requirements
Please confirm that if you are accepted to ComSciCon 2021, you agree to complete all required pre-conference materials. *
